U.S. gymnast Jade Carey from Phoenix faced an uphill battle at the Paris Olympics.
Despite not feeling her best, Jade competed in the floor exercise qualification round.
"I haven't been feeling the best the past few days but I gave it everything I had today," Jade wrote on social media.
Jade's father, U.S. coach Brian Carey, also wasn't feeling well and missed training.
Despite the illness, Jade delivered strong vault performances, averaging a 14.433 score.
This score secured Jade's place in the vault finals, placing her third behind Simone Biles and Rebeca Andrade.
Simone Biles overcame a minor calf injury to lead the U.S. team to a dominant qualifying performance.
Jade will compete in the women's vault final on Saturday. Team USA aims for redemption in the team final on Tuesday.
