Calling all Fallout fans who miss the isometric RPG days! A new fan-made project brings back the original vision for Fallout 3 by Black Isle Studios.

Spotted by GamesRadar, Fallout Yesterday is a mod for Fallout 2 that lets you experience the Fallout 3 that never was.

Van Buren was the codename for the original Fallout 3 by Black Isle Studios. Set in 2253, it would have taken players to the American Southwest with a unique prison escape narrative.

The Fallout Yesterday mod for Fallout 2 expands on the concept of Van Buren, adding a ton of new content to flesh out this lost vision.

Expect new items, weapons, character traits, perks, companions, and more in Fallout Yesterday, bringing the canceled Fallout 3 to life.

Sadly, Van Buren was canceled in late 2003. Interplay went bankrupt, and Bethesda Softworks acquired the Fallout IP.

Bethesda continued the Fallout franchise, releasing their own Fallout 3 in 2008. This marked a shift for the series, adopting an action RPG format with first or third-person perspectives.

Fallout creator Tim Cain recently shed light on the canceled project. An Interplay VP doubted the team could finish it and considered canceling it.

After playing a prototype, Cain believed the game could be completed in 18 months. Unfortunately, this timeframe wasn't enough for Interplay.

The success of the Fallout TV series has boosted interest in the franchise, including the classic isometric RPGs.
